What Is Humanism?- A Brief Summary Of Humanism

The word humanism was coined in the 16 th century to signify those who dealt with subjects like grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry and moral philosophy which were collectively called as humanities. Humanities was strictly distinguished from fields like mathematics, natural philosophy and theology
which were less concerned with the moral and imaginative aspects and activities of man. Humanities focused on classical and above all, Latin culture and they gave great emphasis on learning to speak and write good Latin. They recovered, edited and expounded many ancient texts in Greek and Latin and also wrote many works concerning educational, moral and political themes based largely on classical writers such as Aristotle, Plato and Cicero.
